Reel of Fortune: How Skins Work, Drop Odds per Island and the Fastest Way to Roll

How the slot machines hand out skins, what each island rolls and the shell farming method most players use.

Skins come only from the Reel of Fortune, the neon slot machines found on the islands. Each spin costs one item thrown into the slot: a drip creature, or a boss trophy such as a Spider Crab Shell. Every spin gives a skin from that island's own pool, and the odds are the same everywhere: 70% common, 20% rare and 10% legendary. What changes from island to island is which items' skins are in the pool.

Spin the machine

Hold the item you want to spend, look at the opening at the top of the machine and press Q to throw it in. The reels spin and the skin lands in your collection.

To wear a skin, hold the weapon or tool and press Z or C to cycle through the skins you own for it. For the boat, get in and cycle the same way.

What each machine can give

  • Island 1 (Lighthouse): Knife and Brass Knuckles skins only.
  • Island 2 (Forest): Knife, Pistol, Shotgun, Fishing Rod and Boat.
  • Island 3 (Desert): Pistol, Shotgun, SMG, Fishing Rod and Boat.
  • Island 4 (Rocks): SMG, Sniper Rifle, Fishing Rod and Boat.
  • Island 5 (Volcano): Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Fishing Rod and Boat.
  • Bow islet: the bow skins, and nothing else.

Spin where the item you want is in a small pool. A single skin's chance is its rarity share divided among the skins of that rarity on that machine. The Knife Gold skin, for example, is 2.5% per spin on Island 1 (about 40 spins on average) but 1% on Island 2. The Boat Gold skin is 0.67% per spin on Islands 2 and 3 (about 150 spins) and 0.83% on Islands 4 and 5. The full per-skin table is in the skins database.

The fastest currency: Spider Crab Shells

Drip creatures are slow to find, so many players feed the machines Spider Crab Shells instead:

  1. Reach Island 2 and fully upgrade the Shotgun there.
  2. Save up and buy a stack of Beers on Island 1 at $12 each; about $120 gets ten. Give each one to the lighthouse keeper to turn it into an Empty Beer Can.
  3. Sail to the island whose machine you want. The Empty Beer Can summons the Spider Crab anywhere, not just at the lighthouse.
  4. Kill it with four to six point-blank Shotgun blasts (later, one Sniper Rifle headshot as it surfaces), take the shell, and repeat until the cans run out.
  5. Throw the shells into the Reel of Fortune.

Drip creatures still work, and they come for free while you farm the Fishipedia. Bing Bong, the Coconut Easter egg, can also go in the machine.

Achievement and collection notes

Rolling any legendary skin unlocks GOLD GOLD GOLD; about two thirds of players have it. With a flat 10% legendary chance, you need about ten spins on average.

There are 139 skins in 1.1.3 across ten items, including the default skin of each item and a handful that cannot currently be rolled. Patch 1.1.3 moved brass knuckle skins out of the Island 2 pool and stopped the Gold fishing rod from dropping; patch 1.1.2 added two bow skins.
